Welcome to our latest “Meet the Team” Monday. In a fun twist, I interviewed myself this week, giving you the inside scoop on what it’s like to be a content writer here at Three Crowns.
Howdy! I’m Justine Young, a creative writer from small-town Iowa.
I got my foot in the door at Omaha Magazine, where I wrote about everything from local artists to where you can buy the best fried pickle.
With years of experience in freelance writing across several industries, I’ve now found a home in the financial world. Whatever project I’m working on, I always bring my passion for helping others share their stories and reach their target audiences.
Other than spending time with my awesome husband and toddler, I love to play board games, listen to true crime podcasts, and read anything by Ann Patchett. You can also catch me tutoring elementary students, writing short-form fiction stories, or defending my (perfectly healthy) obsession with ice cream and reality TV.
Read on to learn more about Justine’s role as content writer here at Three Crowns, as well as her personal goals for 2023 and her favorite workday snacks.
What’s your favorite song and why?
It’s gotta be the Naked Mole Rap!
What’s your secret talent?
I broke my middle toe as a kid and as a result, it doesn’t particularly bend. I’m sharing this weird bit of information so that you understand how it’s possible for me to flip you off with my left foot.
Think of an item that has special importance to you. What is it and why is it meaningful?
Back when my husband and I were first dating, we took a road trip to Pike’s Peak together. Somehow a rock from that mountain ended up coming home with us, and I still have it to this day! It sits on a shelf in my living room right next to the wifi router. Every time someone needs the wifi password, I’m reminded of that special time in my life.
You’re stuck on an island and you can bring one famous person with you (who’s not a survivalist). Who are you bringing?
I would choose Lisa Vanderpump – my favorite Real Housewife. She’s old-school British cool and spends her time advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, finding good homes for dogs and creating beautiful bars and restaurants on the West coast.
On a remote island, I think she’d probably befriend all the woodland creatures and somehow find us a bottle of really great wine.
Where are you from and how did you end up in Omaha?
I’m originally from a little town near Sioux City, Iowa. I moved to Omaha for college and have been here ever since. #exciting
If you could learn any other language, which would you choose and why?
I would learn sign language – and it’s actually on my bucket list for 2023!
After years of failed French lessons and mandatory high school Spanish classes, I can speak a garbled concoction of Franglish (Spench?). But what good does it do to dwell on the past? We’re on to ASL!
What’s your go-to drink or snack while working?
I love the ZOA energy drinks with the Rock’s face on them. Also anything chocolate.
What sparks your creativity?
I’m a reality TV fanatic. If I ever feel a creative lull, I just ask myself: What would Teresa Giudice do?
Probably flip a table while screaming expletives, teach a yoga class or maybe go to prison for a few months. I’m not going to do any of those things, but it sure does bring a fresh perspective to the piece I’m writing on retirement planning.
Also, spending time with my amazing toddler!
What’s a 2023 goal you have that’s not work-related?
I’ve scored tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras tour! TikTok is bringing a lot of pressure to choosing the right concert outfit , though. Do I go with a Lovers theme or embrace my Reputation badassery? Please send help and Pinterest boards.
What does a day in your life as Content Writer at Three Crowns look like?
As primary writer on a small team, I write all kinds of content: blogs, newsletters, ads, website copy, brand guides, ebooks, show notes, scripts – the list goes on. I’m also involved with brand strategy and analytics tracking. Nearly every project we tackle at 3C involves some sort of writing – so I get the chance to work with all our clients.
At the same time, my work is pretty solitary, and I don’t actually interact with many people outside our tight-knit team. To keep the loneliness from creepin’ in, I bug my coworkers with games of hangman and Connect 4 – and always have my cat close on those WFH days.
I love that writing gives me the chance to learn. I’ve gained a ton of knowledge about finance and about writing as a craft in the past few years, and I’m excited to keep refining my skills!
