Why More Content Won’t Fix Stalled Marketing: Start With Positioning

The short answer: Publishing more rarely fixes stalled marketing, because without a clear position every new piece has to do every job at once. Start by writing one plain sentence that says who you help and what changes for them, then make everything you publish point back to it.
Is your marketing program struggling?
Website visits? Gone. Leads? Stagnant. Pipeline? Ew.
But no one knows why. And the proposed solution? Usually, “just do more.”
Start a blog. Launch a podcast. Stand up a YouTube channel. Double the posting frequency! Hire a content person!! DO MORE!!!
And then four weeks later, nothing improved and most people stop.
Like Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi, you discovered “more” doesn’t always lead to results.
But why?? Because the new output didn’t connect to anything else you were already doing, and without a clear position behind it all, there was nothing for any of it to actually do.
When it lacks connection and conviction, more effort produces white noise.
The problem probably isn’t volume
Most companies with stalled marketing almost never have an activity problem. They have a positioning problem.
They haven’t made a clear decision about what they stand for, so everything they publish has to do everything at once.
It’s supposed to drive awareness AND communicate the positioning AND differentiate the brand AND generate leads.
I’m tired just reading that sentence.
When your positioning isn’t clear, your tactics have no chance of success.
Start here, please
Before you grab another shiny marketing object, look at what you already have.
Does your website clearly say who you work with? What problem do you specifically call out? Do you describe your client’s situation before you start talking about your solution?
And perhaps most importantly: if I asked you right now to tell me, in plain language, who you help and what changes for them when you do, can you say it in one sentence that takes 15 seconds or less?
Not a corny tagline! A real sentence that your clients would recognize as describing their own life and the thing they desperately need help with.
If you don’t know how to say it clearly in a conversation, your content won’t say it either.
And if your content isn’t saying it clearly, publishing more will only add more heartburn to your marketing life.
The marketing problem in an AI-first world is that everyone can now publish a ton of stuff. There is no scarcity. Content is a commodity.
What AI cannot do is generate your EXACT perspective on the market you serve, your specific read on what clients are actually afraid of, or your conviction about WHY you believe in the way you approach fixing that.
Once you have that 100% solid, THEN AI can help you maximize it. But if you don’t, it’s just creating more gunk.
Fix it in pre-production, not post
Get clear on the problem your clients are living before they find you.
Name it specifically.
Then get clear on what you believe is the right way to address it, and say that plainly.
If you can string those two things together into a single sentence that a real living, breathing person would recognize as describing their own life, you’re on the right track.
Write it down. Repeat it. Memorize. Put it EVERYWHERE.
That’s the foundation. Everything you publish from here should look back to it as its North Star.
