Tiffany Tocco on Career Pivots and the Real Cost of a Credit Card Mistake

Tiffany Tocco was on her way to law school. She’d finished her MBA, had a scholarship lined up, and a plan that made sense on paper.
Then the tax code changed. Her scholarship got reclassified as a taxable gift, and suddenly the math that made law school possible didn’t work anymore.
So she went a different way entirely, and she’s been trying new things and excelling at all of them ever since.
Torie Happe and I caught up with Tiffany, now a risk advisor at a renowned firm serving financial services, at Wealth Management EDGE 2026 to record a Money Chronicles interview, and her path is a good argument against the idea that careers are supposed to follow a straight line.
Who Is Tiffany Tocco?
Tiffany is a risk advisor whose road here ran through corporate America, a stretch doing peer review compliance for the state of Missouri, and a CPA firm where she was hired for quality control and quickly became one of their best business developers.
From there, a former boss laid out two options. She could go into manufacturing or wealth and asset management. By his own admission, tilted the scale toward the latter by placing wealth in New York and manufacturing in Montana.
She’s been building a career in wealth management ever since, most recently moving into risk advisory work.
The Plan That Kept Changing
What stands out about Tiffany’s story isn’t any single decision. It’s how many times the plan changed and how little that ever derailed upward progress.
Law school became corporate compliance work. Compliance work became business development. Business development became consulting, then RIA recruiting, then risk advisory.
It may not be a carefully executed career path planned a decade early, but it’s definitely a career built on being good at whatever was in front of her, and staying open to where that led.
The Credit Card Mistake That Became a Teaching Tool
Tiffany’s biggest money mistake was a familiar one: a credit card taken out to chase bonus points and fly to see a friend. It’s a small decision in the moment that compounds into a bigger one (literally!).
Years later, she used that experience to teach college students personal finance and made them balance a physical checkbook alongside a mock credit card, charging them interest by hand so they could watch the number grow.
The best teachers often have hands-on experience, and that’s the kind of lesson that sticks a lot better than just looking at numbers in a spreadsheet.
Why Tiffany’s Career Story Matters for Advisors
The wealth management industry likes a clean narrative, like the advisor’s kid who becomes an advisor to serve people just like their parent did.
Tiffany’s path is a reminder that most people’s stories don’t work that way, and the story is stronger and more interesting because of it.
Advisors who can hold space for a client’s winding, non-linear relationship with money, instead of expecting a tidy plan, are going to create stronger relationships than the ones who can’t.
Tiffany’s current growth goal is simple: say yes more.
